Steven Fontaine joined our Dallas Lighthouse family in July 2007. Even though he knew nothing about sewing, Steven accepted a position, had the right attitude, and was a quick learner. He worked hard in Textiles; however, he hoped that someday he would have the opportunity to use his computer and telephone skills in our Business Services Division. In November 2011, his wish became a reality. The Dallas Lighthouse signed a contract for call center work that would be performed in-house at our facility. Steven quickly transferred to Business Services to work as a contact management agent.
In 2013, Steven took advantage of an opportunity to work with Microsoft. This new position enabled him to further build his skills in 508 compliance and web content accessibility. This is significant work as it enables the blind’s access to computer technology. “This is my calling, to help people with visual impairment to not struggle the way I’ve had to in the past with navigation on sites that aren’t 508 compliant,” Steven states.
Today Steven is training in the Dallas Lighthouse Contact Management Apprenticeship program. He is also working with Dallas Lighthouse to secure a 508 contract.
Steven has many talents but most of all he has an extraordinary talent for singing and performing before a live audience. While enrolled in the HARTT School of Music in Connecticut, Steven further developed his awesome talent. He then moved to New York City, where he performed in theater and other venues for seven years. From performing in good old classic shows like Carousel to more contemporary shows such as Crazy for You.
However, his vision loss has not stopped him from realizing his dreams. Most days you will see Steven around town or at the Dallas Lighthouse traveling with his good-looking dog guide, Robert.
